Auditions are required for vocals or playing an instrument
The School of Performing Arts holds live auditions in September for the performance papers MUSI 143 Solo instrumental or vocal performance, MUSI 144 Ensemble Music and MUSI 140 Performance Studies. Entry into courses and programmes depends on the successful completion of an audition.
Auditions are not required for MUSI 144, 244 or 344 if you have previously studied Music Performance with us. Entry is automatic for current Music Performance students. However, all MUSI 144, 244 or 344 students should still fill in the Music Performance application form so we know which instrument and ensemble they are taking.
Auditions are not required for the World Music option (Taonga Pūoro, Taiko, and Koto) but students intending to take these papers must still complete the application form.
If you are not auditioning in person you may send in a video audition with the application form. Staff may request a follow-up online interview after viewing your audition video to learn a little more about your musical background and performance goals.
Application form and deadlines
Audition application is now open for 2027.
The number of places available for music performance is determined by our resources. You are encouraged to attend the audition in person at the School of Performing Arts if possible. However, you can also audition online.
To avoid disappointment it is advisable to audition in the year before taking a course (usually in September). However, we will accept auditions up until February prior to the start of classes, depending on staff availability.
Audition dates and application deadlines
Auditions for 2027 will be held on the weekend of 12–13 September 2026, with applications closing on 1 September. A second round of auditions will be held in early November 2026, with applications closing in mid-October. The final deadline for all applications is the end of November. Late auditions may be accepted, subject to class sizes and teaching availability. However, students are encouraged to audition early to maximise their chances of securing a place.
Performance applicants who would prefer an earlier audition should contact us to arrange an audition.

Music Performance application form
This form must be completed each year by all Music Performance students as well as students requesting an audition. It is used to gather information on class sizes, instruments and teaching requirements.

Auditions from a distance
Video link auditions
Applicants who are unable to attend an audition in person or on the dates allocated for auditions should email a video link to the School for consideration. Please send this link at the same time as your application form.

Videos can be from live performances, recitals or examinations as long as these are recent. Videos should be an authentic recording of the applicant’s performance and must not be edited. Vocal performances should be without amplification. Please ensure that any links or video files are easily accessible.
The YouTube or Google Drive link and your completed application form should be received by the end of September at the latest. Late applications will be considered if there are still places available on the course.
Audition requirements
Classical instrumental
Two to three short contrasting pieces, to a total of 10 minutes' audition time.
Classical vocal
Three pieces – one in English (accompanied), one in a language other than English (accompanied), one piece a cappella in your native language
Contemporary voice
Please prepare two contrasting songs and if you are an original songwriter, one of those two songs can be an original.
Musical theatre voice
Please prepare an excerpt of two contrasting musical theatre, no longer than two minutes each.
Contemporary instrumental
Two contrasting pieces, to a total of 10 minutes' audition time.
Notification of acceptance
Following your audition you will be notified of the result as soon as possible. Students who have been offered a place must confirm within two months that they intend to accept the offer. Students who do not confirm their acceptance will be placed on a waitlist and will be required to audition again.
