Film and Media Studies offers grounding in the analysis of film, television and new media such as the Internet.

Papers cover topics in:

  • Historical survey of film and television
  • Contemporary issues in the media
  • Culture, politics, policy and global media
  • Film genres, including New Zealand film
  • National cinemas
  • Television studies
  • Digital culture

AV facilities

The department has its own editing suite for taking clips and screen shots from various media for presentations, assignments and taught courses.

Television Production (MFCO 251) students also use the suite for final editing of practical production assignments. Core practical studio production sessions for the paper are held in Owheo Building Studio.

The Department has a small collection of dvd's and digital resources to complement the larger collections held in the Central Library, and the New Zealand and Pacific collection held in the Hocken Library.
Genuine 35 mm and 16 mm film prints are screened for some of the papers, particularly MFCO 201 History of Film.
