Research interests and activities  

Associate Professor Jason Gurney (Ngāpuhi) is an epidemiologist and Director of the Cancer and Chronic Conditions (C3) Research Group at the University of Otago.  Jason is currently leading multiple national-level projects on equity in health outcomes for Māori, with a focus on cancer.

Jason is currently a Health Research Council (HRC) Māori Emerging Leader Fellow, and Principal Investigator of several HRC-funded projects examining topics including post-operative mortality, the co-occurrence of cancer and diabetes, and equity of access to treatment for Māori with lung cancer.  He is also currently seconded two days per week to Te Aho o Te Kahu – Cancer Control Agency as their Senior Epidemiologist.

Jason is a member of the Public Health Advisory Committee (PHAC), which provides independent public health advice to the Minister of Health.  He also currently sits on the HRC Public Health Research Committee; Health Quality and Safety Commission (HQSC) Perioperative Mortality Review Committee; Hei Āhuru Mōwai (Māori Cancer Leadership Aotearoa); the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership (ICBP) Cancer Intelligence and Data Infrastructure Network; the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand; and multiple Te Aho o Te Kahu working groups.  Jason is also co-Chair of an HRC Science Assessing Committee.
