In 2013, the University bought the 'Living Space' apartment building and repurposed it as a residential college.
In October that year – with permission from Te Rangihīroa's iwi,Ngāti Mutunga – the University announced it would name the building Te Rangi Hiroa College, in honour of the University's first Māori medical graduate, who gained a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery in 1904.
The college opened in February 2014 with 126 residents, led by experienced college Warden Ashley Day. Upon Ashley's departure in early 2017, Rosemary Tarbotton became Warden and led the college until January 2022.
In 2022, the University decided to merge the management of Te Rangi Hiroa College with nearby Cumberland College, and Luke Morrison became Warden of both colleges in February 2022. Deputy and Assistant Wardens have also worked across both colleges since then.
Meanwhile, the University began building a new college which will be given the name Te Rangihīroa, with 450 bedrooms, which will open in 2024.
In December 2022, the college adopted the new name of 192 Castle College, reflecting the address of the college on one of Dunedin's iconic streets. The college continues to be jointly managed with Cumberland College, while retaining its unique identity.
