The university environment often means that many people are in the same place at any given time. This means that illness and disease has the potential to spread very quickly, either through the air or through contaminated surfaces.
Influenza
The influenza 'flu' virus can often spread quickly through groups of people. The virus infects the nose, throat and lungs, and is usually much worse than a cold.
Stopping the spread of flu
You can help to stop the spread of flu by following these practices:
- If you are feeling unwell, stay at home until you feel better
- Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible
- Don't share drinks with others
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
- Put all tissues into a lined bin
The University offers flu vaccinations for staff members. These are usually offered early in the year prior to the flu season. Please contact the Occupational Health Nurse for more information.

Food Safety
The University has a dedicated Food Safety Policy to prevent the spread of illness through food. The purpose of the policy is to outline the safety expectations for food handling and preparation areas. This includes the criteria for exclusion from these areas, protocols and responsibilities of staff.
