If, in the course of their University work, a student or staff member becomes aware of potential child abuse or neglect, they should take action as detailed in clause 1 of the University's Child Protection Policy.
Typically students or staff should confidentially discuss any concerns with their supervisor, manager, Head of Department or the University Registrar before deciding on any potential action. However:
If it is believed that a child is in immediate danger, call the Police on 111.
If a person believes that a current or prospective staff member, student or other University representative may pose a risk to children in the context of University work or study, they should discuss their concerns with the Director of Human resources (in relation to staff) or the University Registrar (in all other cases).
Where it is decided that a child or young person may be at risk of the harm from abuse or neglect, Oranga Tamariki (the Ministry for Children) should be contacted.
Staff and students should be very aware of confidentiality and privacy issues in dealing with potential neglect and abuse allegations.
If working in external organisations (e.g. DHBs, schools), staff and students should be aware of, and adhere to, any child protection policies in place in those organisations.
