The University of Otago is committed to providing a safe campus.
Work by Contractors can generate risk not only to the people doing the work, but also to people in the vicinity of the works.
As per the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015), we are required to do all we practicably can to manage those risks. To assist in mitigating the risks, we have a “two-stage” system for the safe management of Contractors on site (note: “Contractors” means companies, sole-traders and consultants, not individual employees):
Approval: before being able to work on campus, Contractors must be approved as Health and Safety compliant by the University of Otago Health and Safety team. Approval requires evidence of robust H&S systems.
To commence the approval process please contact our team via email:
Email contractors@otago.ac.nz
Induction: Once a Contractor/Company is approved, employees of that Contractor/Company (including sole traders and consultants) must complete a Health and Safety induction so they understand the University's practical Health and Safety requirements.
Upon completion of the Health and Safety induction, they can obtain a University of Otago contractor identity card to show as evidence that they have been inducted.
Please note if you need to employ any sub-contractors, these sub-contractors must also be University of Otago approved (and have completed an induction) before commencing work on campus
NB: Capital Projects sub- contractors are subject to the requirements of the lead contractor on site.

Hazards
The University of Otago requires that you to provide a list of identified hazards or actual risks that the staff or students may be exposed to as a result of the work undertaken by you.
Control measures relevant to each hazard must be supplied before the work is undertaken.
Emergency procedures
In the event of an emergency (i.e. fire or flood) occurring, a siren will be activated. Please stop whatever you are doing, leave the building and do not re-enter until the all clear is given.
Fire Evacuation notices are displayed in all areas. Please read the notice in the area you are working in, and note your nearest evacuation route.
In the event of an emergency, the University of Otago Wardens will direct people out of the building.
If you should notice an emergency situation, activate the nearest alarm and phone emergency services (111 or 1-111 internally) and security (5000 or +64 3 479 5000).
Note: if you need to call the police, fire or ambulance, be aware that the call centre is likely to be somewhere else, so it is important to state the building, street name, room and any other relevant information about your location. The evacuation procedure notice will specify your location for emergency services.
Public safety
At any one time there may be large numbers of people on the University of Otago campus, and the potential risk of a collision is high. The speed limit of 10kph must be observed on campus at all times, as well as all of the parking rules.
Drivers exceeding the speed limit may be banned from campus.
