Hamid Zawari
Hamid Zawari, BSc: in recognition of support for refugee families.
Hamid supports former refugee Afghan whānau settle in Dunedin, particularly youth. He started the Afghan Students' Association (ASA) at the University of Otago and has helped youth develop leadership skills through his various roles and with his team, most importantly, supporting pathways to higher education.
What was your reaction to receiving the award, and what does it mean to you?
The award is a reflection of the commitment I have to helping youth and refugees, and the opportunity I have to be involved in this area.
What have you done since graduation and what are you doing now?
I am currently in the process finishing my Master of Business Administration. I'm working with Te Kaika as a Middle Eastern Youth Support Worker for Former Refugee Youths in Dunedin.
What inspires and motivates you to work in the areas you are involved with?
Seeing the results and outcomes of the amazing work that you get to be involved in. Seeing this provides the core motivation and satisfaction to continue.
What were the highlights of your time at Otago, and has it helped you follow your interests?
Otago has given me the opportunity to feel part of the fabric in building and improving the outcomes of people of disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly for former refugees.
