As part of the current "Genomics - Science of Life" exhibition, Dr Nathan Kenny and other Otago Biochemistry researchers ran a children's activity at the Otago Museum on Saturday. Live genome sequencing using nanopore technology kept parents and other grown-ups interested, while the small people used real laboratory techniques to extract DNA from bananas.
Otago Daily Times published an article about it that you can read here.
The exhibition runs until the 27 May and features fascinating examples of research, illustrated with augmented reality and large-scale digital imagery. A genomic perspective on COVID-19 in New Zealand, and the work of Genomics Aotearoa researchers are highlights.
Listen to RNZ talking to Prof Peter Dearden about the exhibition & genomics in general.
