Completing an Otago Business School Internship Programme helped Information Science graduate Emma Johns to recognise what she wanted to specialise in.
As an intern for the University of Otago's ITS Services, her roles were many and varied as she worked across the campus helping co-ordinate projects and programmes. One day a week she worked on information security that saw her helping to implement an information security awareness programme for University staff during her internship.
“It was a real learn-on-the-go experience and I enjoyed working with people from right across the university on a wide range of jobs. It was a crazy year balancing both study and work, but until then I didn't know what I was capable of, so the experience and the work projects helped to show areas of interest and what I was keen to get involved in.”
What Emma found particularly useful was the experience that backed up the theory she'd learnt in lectures, and her grades showed just how beneficial that was. It also helped her choose to go on and complete post graduate study in Singapore.
“Every day and every IT problem is different; it's what I love most about my job.”
Emma moved to an IT consultant position with Deloitte in Dunedin, where she helped clients with their IT solutions, business processes and IT awareness – always at their own offices. She is now based in Wellington as a contractor.
