2024 update
The Otago Internship Programme is not running in 2024.
The Otago Internship Programme allows students to undertake paid work in the real world of business. You'll also complete the distance learning paper BSNS 301 (18 points) as part of the internship, gaining credit towards your Bachelor of Commerce (BCom).
The minimum duration for an internship is six months, and the maximum is for one year, as determined by the employer. So this does mean a BCom with a one year internship role will become four years in length.
There are a number of requirements that you must meet but once you've been accepted into the Programme and throughout your internship, we make sure there is plenty of support available from both the Otago Business School and your employer.
Programme requirements
Preparing for the Internship Programme
To participate in the Internship Programme there are certain criteria that you must meet, such as having completed two years of your BCom.
It's important to note that, although you must have completed two years when you start your internship, you'll need to apply for acceptance into the Programme early in your second year of study. So register your interest early and look out for information on this website or around the Otago Business School.
Programme process
During your paid internship you won't attend lectures or tutorials, but will be expected to complete academic assessments which includes a Business Project covering a topic (or topics) of interest specific to your employer's business as part of the 300-level Otago academic distance learning paper (BSNS 301).
By successfully completing BSNS 301 you'll gain 18 points towards your degree. This may result in a lighter workload the following year, allowing you to really focus on your other 300-level papers. You could even take on an additional paper to further enhance and strengthen your BCom. You won't be able to complete other papers while completing your internship, but you'll gain extremely valuable practical (and paid) work experience which will be crucial when looking for full-time employment after graduation.
Please note the Internship Programme is for undergraduates only who return to the University of Otago to complete the final year of their degree at the end of their internship.
Support for interns
The Otago Business School's Internship Office and the University of Otago Career Development Centre work together to provide a dedicated internship service.
We liaise with employers to develop quality and appropriate employment opportunities for our students and also prepare students for their internship and provide support throughout their year as an intern.
As an intern, you'll have the support and assistance of:
o Your employer's Workplace Mentor
o An Academic Mentor (an academic staff member of the Otago Business School); and
o The Internship Manager.
“Study stopped being theoretical very quickly with this kind of experience.”
Mina Atayee (Sealord)
“… the internship was an opportunity I am incredibly fortunate to have been given. I will never forget the people who guided me through the year at the University and within the organisation. The knowledge and expertise I have gained has been invaluable and from every interaction, I have gained something that I can apply in my career, whether it be skills based, emotional intelligence related or basic advice, my expectations have been exceeded.”
