Gilles is a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Sustainability. His academic background includes a MA in Landscape Archaeology from the University of Sheffield, UK and a BA in Anthropology from California State University, Fullerton, USA. Gilles recently completed his PhD at the Centre for Sustainability.
Originally from France, Gilles has lived, studied, and traveled in several countries over the years, including the United States, France, England, Japan, and Iceland. From his travels and academic background, he developed a particular interest for the notions of place attachment, sense of belonging, and in the cultural significance of landscape.

PhD Research
Adopting a phenomenological approach, Gilles investigated the temporal and relational qualities of landscape values. His research was especially interested in the way anticipated future events factor into the development of current landscape values. With his thesis Gilles aimed to contribute to a better understanding of the significance of people-landscape relationships in preparing for future socio-environmental opportunities and challenges, such as the ones that may occur as a result of future sea level rise. The research was conducted in two low-lying coastal areas of Dunedin: Waitati and South Dunedin.
