Ann's research interests include the sociology of agriculture and family farming, rural community resilience, social assessment, social indicators and demography.
Ann joined the Centre in late 2010 and became involved in work on community resilience. She has a BA (Hons) and MA in Geography from Otago University, and a PhD in Sociology from Essex University. Ann's background is in the public service. In addition to working for two Minister's of Agriculture in NSW (from opposing political perspectives) in the 1980s, Ann managed a research programme as Manager Rural Affairs at the Ministry of Agriculture (MAF) in Wellington during the 1990s. This was followed by work on integrated contracting (Funding for Outcomes) at the Ministry of Social Development, then three years at Internal Affairs at the Interface between central and local government.
Ann has represented New Zealand at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). She was awarded a New Zealand Suffrage Medal in 1993 for work with rural women. She is National President of the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women, President of the New Zealand Geographical Society, and Awards Officer of New Horizons for Women Trust.
