The University of Otago, Christchurch recently opened its doors to more than 200 Canterbury secondary school students to showcase the campus and options for a career in health science.

The event – named D.A.R.E (Discover, Achieve, Research and Engage) Otago - involved staff and students from the campus sharing their career and study stories and demonstrating the full breadth of health science pathways. Many of the talks were given by some of the campus' more than 700-strong postgraduate student population. Secondary students from almost 30 schools were also introduced to the many different areas of health research at the University of Otago, Christchurch, through interactive displays.

It was the first time such an event had been held at the Christchurch campus, and such was the response, it is likely to become a regular fixture.

Professor Vicky Cameron is the Christchurch campus' Deputy Dean and has a responsibility for external engagement. She says the staff and students involved in the day told such inspiring stories about their career journeys; research teams provided engaging talks and displays in the foyer; and professional staff welcomed the students and acted as guides.

“I had so much positive feedback from the visiting students and teachers, so I know everyone's efforts were greatly appreciated.”

The University's school liaison officer for Canterbury Prajesh Chhanabhai says feedback on the event was fantastic.

“Some of the teachers that attended told me they were blown away by the students and staff that spoke, the research that was carried out and just the pure passion that came across with each person they spoke with. They also said all their students left buzzing as they didn't realise that Health Sciences was more than the five professions.”
