Overview
PhD candidates are being recruited to join the Nutrition in Medicine Research Group, University of Otago, Christchurch.
We carry out translational nutrient-based clinical studies with the aim to prevent and treat various acute and chronic illnesses, e.g. infection, cancer, diabetes. We also carry out laboratory-based biomarker studies with the aim to improve understanding of the mechanistic underpinnings to help inform best clinical practice. Overall, our objective is to have a positive impact on patient health outcomes and quality of life.
We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated students to do their PhD, or other postgraduate degree.
Potential topics include:
- Infection and immune function
- Critical illness and septic shock
- Mood and cognitive health
- Diabetes and metabolic health
Applicants must be eligible for admission to the PhD programme at the University of Otago.

Whether you are a domestic or an international student, the University of Otago has a range of Doctoral Scholarships available to you.
If you are a straight A student (GPA of 8 - 'A' grade) or higher, who has completed an Honours or Master's degree with an appropriate research component from a New Zealand university then you are likely to be guaranteed a University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship.
