Dr Nicola Scott conducted her undergraduate studies at the University of Otago, New Zealand, graduating with a BSc Honours in Biochemistry in 2003.

Her Honours Project was The Effect of Cryoprotective Agents and Freezing on the Redox Status of Murine Fibroblasts.

She was awarded a CMRF Summer Studentship in 2003 to determine if Npr-1 knockout and wild-type mice differed in heart weight, blood pressure, infarct size and in plasma levels of cardiac hormones following myocardial infarction.

The Summer Studentship was part of an ongoing study of the gene pathways activated during cardiac remodelling.

During this study Nicola observed that Npr-1-/- mice exhibit cardiac abnormalities including enlarged and displaced hearts, which has led to the development of Nicola's PhD project.

In 2004 Nicola was awarded a PhD Scholarship by the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand. Her PhD topic was The Role of the Natriuretic Peptides in Cardiac Development and Organogenesis.

She graduated in 2008 with a PhD undertaken in the Department of Medicine, University of Otago.
