Simon is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon and a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the Department of Surgery at the University of Otago, Christchurch.

He grew up in Christchurch and then moved to Dunedin where he completed his undergraduate medical training. He completed his final years of surgical training in Christchurch and became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons ( RACS ) in 2017.

After undertaking a Masters, he completed further subspecialty training in Colorectal Surgery in Perth at Fiona Stanley Hospital (2019) and in Melbourne at the Royal Melbourne and Women’s Hospitals (2020) and the Western Hospital (2021). He became a member of Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand ( CSSANZ ) in 2022 and returned to Christchurch as a Consultant Surgeon.

He is co-convenor of the 6th Year TI Surgery Module and also teaches 4th Year students on their surgical placements.

His research interests include:

  • Perioperative assessment
  • Frailty
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
