Copyright protects original works, regardless of whether the work is published or unpublished.
It is unlawful to copy all or part of a work without a licence or without approval from the copyright owner, unless there is a statutory exception to such infringement.
Copyright in New Zealand is based on the Copyright Act 1994 which is administered by the Ministry of Economic Development. Enforcement of copyright in New Zealand is available through civil action or criminal action. Criminal liability for breach of copyright can extend to $50,000 or three months' imprisonment.
Please do not send copies of article to colleagues as an email attachment or distribute multiple copies as these methods do not comply with copyright law or fair dealing guidelines.
It is recommended that you send links to articles rather than attachments or copies. Colleagues then can access the article and read it themselves without breaching copyright or fair dealing guidelines.

The University of Otago, like most universities has negotiated a licensing agreement that grants the University the right to copy certain material beyond the allowances for copying for fair dealing or educational purposes.
