Overview
New Zealand has one of the highest incidences of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the world. Currently, IBD can only be managed but not cured. The exact aetiology and pathologic events that drive chronic inflammation in IBD are currently unknown.
Using a mouse model of colitis, we found that overexpressing an analogue of the human Δ133p53 variant, Δ122p53, upregulated bowel inflammation and immune infiltration.
This project is suitable for postgraduate students who have a solid background in immunology and gut ecology or inflammation.
Students with research experience in laboratory mouse manipulation and monitoring, tissue dissection/digestion, RNA analysis of faecal material, and histological analysis are desired.
Depending on the student’s performance and the availability of research funding, this project could be continued for a higher degree.
Previous experience in laboratory mouse handling is essential for a MSc degree and above.
