The distance-taught paper in Community Child Health (CHHE 701) is a compulsory part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Child Health (DCH).
It complements the clinical component of the DCH (CHHE 702), which is taught in a hospital setting where candidates hold positions as junior paediatric medical staff. It is recommended that students enrol for CHHE 701 immediately before or after completing CHHE 702.
This paper provides an opportunity to read and discuss material important to the understanding of community child health issues. The paper is of six months' duration, and is available in both first and second semesters.
Course book material and recommended readings are available on Blackboard. 16 one-hour audioconference sessions with national experts in the field. Candidates will be expected to take part in community visits to gain an understanding of facilities catering to the health needs of children outside hospitals.
CHHE 701 is also available, on its own, to a wider range of postgraduate students from medical training programmes (e.g. the Family Medicine Training Programme, or the Master of Health Sciences degree), as well as non-medical postgraduate students from health professions such as nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The community visits in this paper meet the requirements of the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) training scheme.
This paper is a hospital-based course available as part of the DCH to medically qualified candidates who are employed in paediatrics in an approved New Zealand hospital for at least six months at the time they are studying for the course. It comprises approximately 22 distance-taught audioconference tutorials using CD-ROM-based PowerPoint presentations, a number of locally-taught tutorials and practical skills teaching sessions, as well as outpatient-based teaching.
CHHE 702 is also available, on its own, to doctors wishing to pursue a career in an area such as Emergency Medicine or anaesthesia, where knowledge of the management of acute and chronic paediatric conditions is important but community-based issues may be felt to be less important.
Both CHHE 701 and CHHE 702 may be taken as stand-alone papers for a Certificate of Proficiency (COP).
