Overview
The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (BPharm(Hons)) programme comprises the standard Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) programme with additional training in advanced research design, methodologies, techniques and analysis resulting in a research dissertation.
The main objective of the BPharm(Hons) degree is to provide education and training in research to a small, academically select group of undergraduate pharmacy students who have achieved a high GPA and have an interest in research careers. The Honours programme will provide additional learning opportunities to outstanding students that will be of benefit to them when applying for competitive postgraduate positions, scholarships and funding as well as meeting the University's criteria for direct entry to PhD programmes. BPharm(Hons) students can also apply to go through the process to be registered as Pharmacists in New Zealand.
The BPharm(Hons) is a four year programme with the fourth year having 144-points which includes a 36-point research component.
Regulations for the Degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (BPharm(Hons))
Admission to the Programme
- Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
- Applicants must be current candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy undertaking the Third Year of the programme.
- Applicants must have a grade average of at least B+ after completion of the first semester of Third Year.
- Eligible applications will be ranked, based on their grade average and a written application. The top ranked applicants will be interviewed and, based on the interview, offered admission to the programme. The number of students admitted to the programme shall normally be five to ten in any one year.
Structure of the Programme
- Every programme shall consist of the requirements for the First, Second and Third Year courses for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy together with the Fourth Year papers prescribed in the Schedule.
- No student may take a paper additional to those prescribed in the Fourth Year of the programme without the approval of the Dean of the School of Pharmacy.
- The Fourth Year course must be undertaken on a full-time basis.
Withdrawal from the Programme
- A candidate whose progress is not satisfactory, based on results in PHCY 480, PHCY 431, PHCY 485 and a mid-year supervisor's report, may be required to withdraw from the Honours programme by the Dean of the School of Pharmacy.
- Where a candidate withdraws from the Honours programme, voluntarily or otherwise, the Dean of the School of Pharmacy may recommend that the candidate may proceed to the ordinary degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy, and determine the papers which shall be credited towards that degree.
Standard of Award of the Degree
- The degree may be awarded with First Class Honours, with Second Class Honours (Division I), with Second Class Honours (Division II), or with Third Class Honours. The class of Honours shall be approved by the Board of Studies based on the performance of the candidate in PHCY 410, PHCY 420, PHCY 431, PHCY 480 and PHCY 485.
- A candidate who fails to obtain Honours may, on the recommendation of the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy.
- A candidate for Honours who is required to sit a special examination in the Fourth Year as a result of failing a paper will not be awarded the degree with Honours, but shall, if successful in passing the special examination, be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy.
Variations
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences) may, in exceptional circumstances, approve a course of study which does not comply with these regulations.
