This comprehensive primary bicultural teacher education programme enables graduates to teach in primary, intermediate, bilingual and/or Māori-medium schools (depending on a graduate’s ability in te reo Māori).
It includes components based in te ao Māori and develops proficiency in te reo Māori. Applicants for the programme do not need to be fluent in te reo Māori.
This endorsement is available only at the Invercargill Campus.
Successful applicants require enthusiasm for children and learning and a commitment to increasing their understanding of te ao and te reo Māori.
The University of Otago College of Education offers primary teaching qualifications for those who want to teach in primary and intermediate schools in New Zealand and overseas. All of these qualifications can lead to teacher registration.
If you have an interest in, and enthusiasm for, children and their learning, this is a good option.
Primary Bicultural Education is an endorsement (specialisation) option for the Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg).
This endorsement is available only at the Invercargill Campus.
Note: In Curriculum Studies papers, students will focus on the English medium documents, while developing a working knowledge of the parallel marau curricula within Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
Students who first enrolled in 2022 or earlier will normally complete the programme under the regulations in force when they first enrolled.
