Researcher profile:
Known impacts of vitamin D
Reduced vitamin D levels are associated with increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Patients who have low levels at the time of diagnosis have a poorer outcome following treatment. In healthy volunteers vitamin D supplementation reduces cell division, and stabilises certain cells.
Vitamin D and tumour biology
Our researchers will undertake a unique study in CRC. We will randomise newly diagnosed CRC patients, and administer either a large dose of vitamin D or placebo prior to surgery. Samples of both tumour, and normal colon will be collected, and aligned with response data.
The effects we are particularly interested in include immune regulation, cell growth, and proliferation pathways. The study will provide new insights into how vitamin D affects tumour biology, and will inform future clinical studies aimed at improving patient outcome.
