Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku | Māori Subject Headings
Our new Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku library guide was launched in Te Wiki o te Reo 2022 and explains what Māori subject headings are and how to use them in the library catalogue. It's very much a living guide - please let us know if you have any suggestions or feedback! Look under Nga Kaupapa Hou for how to suggest a new term to the National Library team.

Kai & Kēmu: Uare Taoka o Hākena (Hocken Collections)
To celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2022 the Hocken Collections hosted Kai & Kēmu themed foyer displays and two public workshops on kēmu Māori (games).

The Kai & Kēmu display gave a quiet nod to the 35th anniversary celebration of Te Taura Whiri O Te Reo Māori, the 50th anniversary of Te Matatini's first Polynesian society festival and the 50th anniversary of the Māori language petition.
Kēmu Māori events
University staff and students were invited to experience kēmu Māori at lunchtime sessions at the Hocken during Te Wiki o te Reo.
We played the new boardgame KAUPAPA – a fun reo Māori game designed by Kura Rēhia in collaboration with Maimoa Creative and Hēmi Kelly. Released in 2020, it is a great tool for learning new kupu and flexing those language muscles.
For the next session we played three kēmu Māori: tī rākau (stick games), whai (string games) and hī ika (go fish).

A display in the Central Library complemented the nearby Te Takarangi panels which celebrate Māori publications.
Māori Health Models
Te Whare Pukapuka Whaiora | Health Sciences Library
The display in Te Whare Pukapuka Whaiora highlighted the four Māori health models:
- Te Pae Māhutonga
- Te Whare Tapa Whā
- Te Wheke
- Meihana
The display also referenced the proposed organisational structure for the Te Aka Whai Ora (Māori Health Authority), which supports the analogy of a waka hourua on a journey to Pae Tawhiti using the traditional compass to help navigate.
