PLEASE NOTE: Change to submission dates for 2008.
Our submission period is now from the beginning of March to the end of May.
The 2007 submission period is now closed. To be considered for our 2008 issue, please submit your work sometime between the beginning of March and the end of May 2008. You will be informed of our decision at the end of June. Deep South welcomes critical essays
in the Humanities and Arts, extracts from work in progress, reviews, short
stories, poems, and work by artists and photographers. We would encourage graduate students in particular to submit work to us, but submissions from anyone are welcome.
Email submissions are encouraged (see link at top of page), either in the body of an email or as an attachment. For attachments, Word files are preferred; Deep South is put together on a number of different computers, some of which find non-Word attachments very confusing.
You can also submit hard copies to the below address:
Deep South Department of English
University of Otago
P.O. Box 56
Dunedin
New Zealand
Notes for contributors
Please do not submit more than five pieces of work at any one time.
Graphics which are to be included with the document should be in GIF
format. If they are in a different format we will attempt to convert them,
but the difficulty of conversion will be taken into account when we decide
on which papers will be selected for publication.
Photographs and other illustrative material, in GIF format, should
be submitted separately from the typescript, with a note indicating appropriate
position in the text.
Notes and references, which should be kept to a minimum, are to be typed
and attached to the main body of the paper. They should not appear at the
foot of individual pages. Please do not use smart quotes. Do not use footnotes
or endnotes. Include the notes in the body of the paper. Converting from
various footnote and endnote formats to HTML is extremely time consuming.
Clearly mark in your paper where a note is located (e.g. using [1]
) and at the end of the paper include the note. For example:
The largest work of fiction created by the late L. Ron Hubbard,
Mission
Earth[1], ran to ten volumes, and was, at least, interesting.
[1] New Era Publications UK Ltd, 1987.
We accept email submissions, both in the main body of the email and as
attachments. In the case of short submissions, poetry for example,
ASCII text is sufficient.
If you wish your manuscript or disk to be returned, please include return
postage, and a self addressed envelope.
The preferred style for citations of written sources follows current MLA
conventions. However, any of the recognised citation forms is acceptable,
as long as you are consistent.
HTML formatting
If you know HTML it would be helpful if you formatted your work. We are
not using complex markup. Most of the papers submitted to
Deep South
are simple text articles which do not need a lot of layout so doing your
own markup is not impossible. To see examples of Deep South's tagged
text use the "View Source" option on the pull-down menu of your browser
while viewing a Deep South article.
Alternatively you might like to look at add-on products for your favourite
word processor to let you generate the HTML. We know of
WordPerfect
Internet Publisher and Internet Assistant for Microsoft Word.
Both are free and available via the net. There are certainly others.
