Co-organisers (L-R) Kate O'Meeghan (Selwyn) and Lucy King (Knox) hope to see the fundraiser become an annual event for the colleges.

The Breast Cancer Society will benefit from a donation of $400 thanks to a fundraising brunch held at Knox College earlier this month.

The joint Knox-Selwyn fundraising initiative was supported by over 150 female residents from the two colleges who each brought a donation and wore pink for the special occasion.

In keeping with the theme of the fundraiser, pink decorations adorned the Knox great hall where the students were treated to a special pink-themed breakfast prepared by the Knox kitchen.

Second-year Commerce and Law student Lucy King (Knox) who helped organise the event says the brunch was a “lovely occasion” for the Knox and Selwyn College residents to get to know one another and to get behind a worthy cause.

“It has touched many of our lives and is close to many of our hearts,” she says.

“We celebrated being pink, but we also took a moment to remember those who had suffered and endured through breast cancer and also those who had lost the battle.”

Though the students hadn't originally planned to hold a fundraiser – they were simply looking for a way for the two colleges to get to know each other better – when the suggestion to do a breast cancer fundraiser was put forward, there was tremendous support.

“I had seen pink breakfasts being held before and I thought it would be a good excuse to decorate our great hall and dress up, as well as making a well-deserved contribution to the community,” Lucy says.

“Also, there aren't many girls-only events held in the college, so I think the girls really appreciated having something special organised just for them.”

She hopes the breakfast will become a new tradition for Knox and Selwyn.
