My name is Justine Camp and I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Big Data Team of the Better Start National Science Challenge and I am privileged to be able to be a part of the challenge. My role involves working with Māori communities to ensure that their views around the use of Māori data are part of our teams everyday thinking and supporting Māori led research that involves big data. In addition, we are making good use of the access to the IDI that is granted to us for the term of the challenge and partnering with iwi to support their research aspirations.

In addition to my big data research, I am funded by Brain Research New Zealand and I have created a whānau health compass that will provide whānau with the data to track their own health and well-being. I am passionate about improving whānau well-being. I have done research on the impacts of Type II diabetes mellitus on whānau.

Before starting my PhD research I was part of a team that was responsible for the creation and implementing of a Māori strategic framework at Otago Polytechnic including building a strong Māori research platform. I am currently the iwi representative at the University of Otago Treaty of Waitangi committee, the Ngāi Tahu research consultation committee, and the Southern District Health Board iwi governance. In my spare time, I run a Māori art gallery and Tā Moko studio the only one of its kind in Dunedin. My first priority is my daughter Takiwai and her son my mokopuna Tamaraukura and his future is one of the key drivers for my own research.
