Dr Willem Kolff was the first person to successfully dialyse a patient with renal failure.

He did it in the occupied Netherlands during WW2, whilst also working for the resistance and hiding people from the Nazis by helping them fake illness.

His machine was made from scavenged bits of crashed bomber, sewing machines, a Ford car cooling system, electric kettles and sausage skins.

2024 History of Medicine and Science Lecture Series sponsored by The Otago Medical School Alumni Association.

Everyone is welcome.
