Tony Hocken Research Award
This is a 12-month research award that is granted annually or as funds allow. It is usually granted for one year.
The award is granted to a registrar to undertake a defined research project. The applicant is expected to enroll for a postgraduate degree (such as MMedSc) during this year. The supervisor of the project should be a member of the Dunedin School of Medicine's Department of Medicine.
The award is funded from earnings from the postgraduate activities of the Department of Medicine. It is therefore supported by the efforts of colleagues in the Department of Medicine, who donate their time and expertise.
Department of Medicine scholarship for Science Graduates
This is a research award that is granted bi-annually or as funds allow. The award is granted to a science graduate who would like to do a PhD or Masters programme in the Department of Medicine. The primary supervisor of the project should be a member of the Department of Medicine.
The scholarship is granted for three years to PhD candidates, and for a 12-month period for Master of Science students. The award is funded from earnings from the postgraduate activities of the Department of Medicine. It is therefore supported by the efforts of colleagues in the Department of Medicine, who donate their time and expertise.
Postgraduate scholarships at the Dunedin School of Medicine
The Dunedin School of Medicine has four specialised scholarships available for PhD or master's students based in their academic departments, this includes the Department of Medicine:
- Dunbar Scholarship
- Emily Johnston Scholarship for Research in the Science and Art of Clinical Medicine
- Frances G Cotter Scholarship for Research in Medicine
- Lady King Scholarship
Availability of the scholarships is usually announced in May, with an application deadline in mid July.

The University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship is the main doctoral scholarship, open to both international and domestic applicants.
The University of Otago Research Master's Scholarship is the main masters scholarship, open to domestic applicants only.
