The Department of Pathology is a great place to further your understanding of diseases affecting our communities and to participate in cutting-edge translational research.

Our world-class research groups offer a diverse range of projects with a focus on cancer biology, epigenetics, and developmental disorders. The Department houses highly experienced staff and state-of-the-art facilities to support students' research.

Students undertaking postgraduate studies provide a vital contribution to the ongoing research excellence within the Department.

In addition to the Doctor of Philosophy, we offer a variety of postgraduate programmes, all of which include a significant research component.

Postgraduate research within the (biomedical) science programmes:

* You may carry out your study in the Department of Pathology, regardless of which BBiomedSc major that you select for your BBiomedSc(Hons) or MBiomedSc degree.

Postgraduate research within the health professional programmes:

The Department of Pathology also participates in the research component of the degree programmes listed below, in conjunction with other University Departments.

**Available in the Department of Pathology as a Genetics (GENE) major, or in another major providing there is co-supervision with a staff member in the host Department.

Applying for a PhD

PhD application process

If you are interested in further investigating PhD study within the Department of Pathology, please email one of our Postgraduate Coordinators, Dr Heather Cunliffe or Dr Glen Reid, with the following information:

  • Brief CV
  • Academic Transcript
  • Paragraph outlining your areas of research interest (half-page maximum)
  • If English is your second language, we will require information on your English language competence, including standards achieved in any formal tests taken.
  • Required English standards (PDF)
