Meningitis and Encephalitis: Diagnostic and Management Challenges
Meningitis and encephalitis may be caused by various infectious etiologies and noninfectious etiologies. Despite the availability of microbiological tools, serologies and nucleic acid amplification tests such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the most common infectious agents, the majority of CNS infections currently still remain with an unknown etiology. Meningitis and encephalitis may be associated with significant morbidity including long-term neurological and neurocognitive sequelae and mortality with some etiologies requiring urgent antimicrobial therapy, or early adjunctive steroids to improve clinical outcomes. This talk will review the diagnostic and management challenges facing clinicians in the empirical approach to suspected meningitis, community and healthcare-associated meningitis and in encephalitis syndromes.
A light lunch will be available from 12.45pm
All University of Otago and Southern District Health Board staff and students are welcome to attend.
