General Surgery and Urology
This eight-week clinical attachment exposes students to surgical patients with an emphasis on general surgical, and vascular and urological conditions. Groups of three or four students are attached to a clinical team (consisting of two or three consultants, a registrar, and a house surgeon), for four weeks at a time.
Some students have the opportunity to spend one of their two four-week runs in Invercargill.
Students will learn by integrating as a team member. Being involved with the care of patients looked after by the team will be the focus of the learning experience in surgery. This hands-on experience supported by teaching ward rounds, bedside teaching including observed demonstration of clinical skills by students, and operating theatre participation is the basis of the teaching.
The team activities will see students participating in multidisciplinary meetings where their patients are discussed.
Attributes we value in student performance is knowing and understanding their patients, integrating and communicating well in the team and ward environment, and showing motivation within the clinical environment.
These attributes are captured on the PASAF form at the end of the run.
Knowledge and skills are developed with self-directed learning, with small group bedside tutorials (two per week), teaching outpatient clinics (two or three per attachment), and full group tutorials several times a week. There is a special suturing skills workshop.
The full group tutorials are based on topics and cases and include integrated tutorials with anaesthesia, radiology, microbiology, and pathology.
Final assessment at the end of the run will be informed by feedback from all clinical tutors (especially your home tutor), case write-ups and a case appreciation/critically appraised topic (CAT), and a two-station OSCE and short multiple-choice quiz at the end of the run.
