During the sixth (Trainee Intern) year, all students spend six weeks on a surgical attachment as part of the Ward Management module. Students are able to select from clinical units in various surgical disciplines (including anaesthesia and intensive care) at either Dunedin Hospital on the main campus in Dunedin, or in Kew Hospital in Invercargill.
The emphasis is on the Trainee Intern being an apprentice House Surgeon and he/she is encouraged to become fully immersed in the life of the surgical team.
