A case for future-facing literacies

About Professor Sandretto's research

Susan’s research programme takes a critical lens to literacy, teacher education, and educational policy. Her work with primary and secondary school teachers and their students has focused on the development of critical literacy, a sceptical stance towards all texts. An important component of literacy, critical literacy acknowledges the power of texts to shape our understandings of ourselves, others and the world. Her published resources provide models to shift classroom practice.

As an Ohu Mātanga (Team Writer) for the English Learning Area, Susan’s research informs educational policy at the national level for the refreshed curriculum Te Mātaiaho and the pedagogy statement contained in the Common Practice Model, which supports the Literacy & Communication and Maths Strategy.

Susan has focused on the unintended consequences of school choice educational policies that result in decreased rates of active transport to school as a member of the Built Environment Active Transport to School research group.

This lecture will be followed with light refreshments, tea, coffee and juice.
