When study and life intersect: Students' perspectives on studying topics that have personal significance in health professional education
The content of health professional education programmes – pathways through healthcare, the determinants of health, and experiences of illness – overlaps with significant personal or family experiences for many students. We know that these experiences influence many students' decision to study health-related courses. However, less is known about students' experiences of actually studying content that has parallels with their own life. Using in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, Emma's study explores students' reasons for studying personally significant topics, what is challenging about doing this kind of study, and what students have found to be supportive. The aim of this research is to contribute to creating inclusive, equitable teaching and learning environments in health professional education.
