The University of Otago College of Education has an excellent reputation for graduating quality secondary school teachers. Graduates will be qualified to teach in secondary schools throughout New Zealand, and may also travel overseas with their qualification.
Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary Education)
This postgraduate (Level 9) qualification is aimed at people who have already graduated with a university degree and who wish to complete an initial teacher education degree to become a secondary school teacher.
For admission to the MTchgLn degree endorsed in Secondary Education, applicants must normally have an average grade of at least a B in the final year major subject requirements for a Level 7 bachelor's degree (requiring papers worth at least 360 points) or in the course components for a postgraduate qualification; or acceptable alternative qualifications or experience (i.e. proven postgraduate study).
Over an extended academic year (January to December), student teachers take six compulsory papers addressing education and pedagogy (including diversity and inclusion), curriculum, and professional experience (school-based practical teaching experience).
Careful degree planning to ensure sufficient content for secondary teaching subjects is strongly recommended.
Offered in Dunedin only. Students will usually be placed outside of the Dunedin area for at least one of their professional experience blocks.
