The English Programme at the University of Otago has a distinguished record of teaching and research. It was ranked in the top 150 in the world for English language and literature in the 2022 QS World Rankings by Subject. It also ranked first in the field of English language and literature for the number of research-active teaching staff in the most recent Performance Based Research Funding Assessment of New Zealand universities.

University of Otago Literary Society (Litsoc)

The student-run University of Otago Literary Society (Litsoc) is for students who have an interest in English literature, though students from all disciplines are welcomed. Litsoc brings a social dimension to the love of literature, organising events such as quizzes, wine and cheese afternoons, poetry readings, and film/theatre outings and screenings. Members are provided with regular updates of events in the community they might like to attend.
