The English Programme at the University of Otago has a distinguished record of teaching and research, with offerings in literary studies, academic/professional writing, and creative writing. We routinely rank in the top 150 in the world for English language and literature in QS World Rankings by Subject and have ranked as high as 40. We also routinely rank first in the field of English language and literature in New Zealand for research-active teaching staff in the Performance-Based Research Funding Assessment of New Zealand universities.

University of Otago Literary Society (Litsoc)
The student-run University of Otago Literary Society (Litsoc) is for students who have an interest in English literature, though students from all disciplines are welcomed. Litsoc brings a social dimension to the love of literature, organising events such as quizzes, wine and cheese afternoons, poetry readings, and film/theatre outings and screenings. Members are provided with regular updates of events in the community they might like to attend.
