The stone stronghold was built for Hernán Cortés between 1526-29 and used by him to administer the vast estates granted him by the Spanish Crown. After his death it fell into decay, but in 1767 was restored and used as the administrative centre of the town until 1965. It is now an archaeological museum, the back balcony of which features the celebrated Diego Rivera murals depicting the history of Morelos.
