¡Box! said an advertisement. ARENA TOMALÍN. Frente al Jardín Xicotancatl. Domingo 8 de Noviembre de 1938. 4 Emocionantes Peleas UTV, 52.
The "Xicotancatl Garden" appears to have been based on the small plaza just off the Zócalo in Tlaxcala, the dominant feature of which is the statue of the younger Xicotancatl, hero of Tlaxcala, who led the Tlaxcalans against Cortés and who, even when peace had been made, never really accepted the alliance with the Spaniards, regarding them (with some justification) as more dangerous than the Aztecs. |
...it is referred that on this place, young Xicohtencatl harangued his warriors, telling them to fight the conquerors to the limit, dying if necessary UTV, 301.
The travel folder confuses the younger Xicotancatl with his father, the blind Senator, who made the celebrated speech; the wall panel on the ayuntamiento in Tlaxcala increases the confusion by describing the younger Xicotancatl as "supreme chief of the Tlaxcalan warriors", and by placing the words "Viva Jesus" into the mouth of the unrepentant pagan. |
