... the Ufa days when a defeated Germany was winning the respect of the cultured world by the pictures she was making – UTV, 24. Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920), dir. Robert Wiene, stars Werner Krauss (who also starred in Der Student von Prag) and Conrad Veidt (Orlacs Hände). As in UTV, the main narrative is introduced through a flashback told by the narrator Francis (Friedrich Fehér). Designer Hermann Warm – along with painters Walker Röhrig and Walter Reimann – painted shadows and lights directly on the set walls, a technique which gestures towards the 'twist' ending, that Francis' distorted recollections are the result of his delusion. In an earlier manuscript [UBC 29-3, 10], Jacques' zacuali was like "a still from the Cabinet of Dr Caligari and the frontispiece to a cheap edition of Omar Khyyam." When Lowry was living in Dollarton, Gerald Noxon was invited to visit "the Cabinet of Dr. Caliglowry" [2 Nov. 1943; Lowry / Noxon Letters, 34]. |
