EQ WHAI Physics Scholarship

About this scholarship

The EQ WHAI Physics Scholarship is co-ordinated by Raukaha Health Workforce Development Unit’s EQ (Socioeconomic Equity) Programme at the University of Otago. This scholarship is intended to support students who have had limited academic access or exposure to physics during secondary school.

The EQ WHAI Physics Scholarship supports EQ eligible students to undertake the JumpStart Physics course prior to enrolling in Biological Physics (PHSI191) as part of the Health Sciences First Year ( HSFY ) programme. Designed to support students interested in a career in health, the EQ WHAI Physics Scholarship provides access to the JumpStart Physics course, as well as continuous support throughout the PHSI191 paper and HSFY .

About the JumpStart Physics course

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the background knowledge and study skills necessary to confidently undertake the PHSI191 Biological Physics paper at Otago. It is designed for students whose learning in secondary school physics is incomplete, having not taken Year 12 (NCEA Level 2) physics. Students undertaking this course will still need to meet the University’s admission and entrance criteria in order to proceed to full credit study.

What Do WHAI Physics Recipients receive?

WHAI Physics Scholarship recipients will receive:

  • Tuition fees for the University of Otago JumpStart Physics course
  • Residential college accommodation for the duration of the JumpStart Physics course (3 weeks)
  • Additional resources, tutorials and academic support for the PHSI191 paper and HSFY

EQ WHAI Physics Scholarship recipients will be required to attend a mihi whakatau in recognition of their award and to engage with additional PHSI191 academic support available as a condition of the scholarship.

EQ staff will meet with individual recipients at key points throughout the semester to provide support where needed.

EQ IntroCHEM Scholarship

About this scholarship

The EQ IntroCHEM Scholarship is co-ordinated by the EQ (Socioeconomic Equity) Programme at the University of Otago. This scholarship is intended to support students who have limited academic background or access to chemistry at secondary school.

The EQ IntroCHEM Scholarship supports EQ eligible students to undertake the Introductory Chemistry distance-taught online course in their final year of secondary study. Designed to support students interested in enrolling in the Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) programme at Otago in the future, the EQ IntroCHEM Scholarship provides access to the Introductory Chemistry course and regular contact with EQ staff during the period of study.

About the Introductory Chemistry course

Introductory Chemistry is a not-for-credit distance-taught online course intended for students with limited chemistry backgrounds. The material covered in the course will provide a basic understanding of the chemical principles that describe the properties and reactions of elements and compounds and provide a solid basis for tertiary chemistry study. The course takes approximately 50 hours to complete.

What do EQ IntroCHEM recipients receive?

EQ IntroCHEM Scholarship recipients will receive:

  • Course fees for the University of Otago Introductory Chemistry course
  • Regular contact with EQ staff during the course
  • Academic support from chemistry department staff as needed

Criteria for the EQ IntroCHEM Scholarship

Successful applicants must:

  • Be eligible for the EQ (Socioeconomic Equity) Programme
  • Have limited academic background/access to chemistry at secondary school and about to undertake their final year of study
  • Be able to complete the Introductory Chemistry distance-taught online course (50 hours) with own access to a device and internet
  • Show commitment to pursue Health Sciences study and a career in health in the future

Criteria for EQ Otago University Science Academy Support

To be considered, both students and staff must:

Students must also have attended for all senior years of study.

Applicants do not need to make a separate submission for EQ support but please indicate ‘EQ’ on your main Science Academy application.
