- 2 x 12-week semesters plus exam period

- Successful completion leads into the second year of a Bachelor's degree

Gain the confidence, academic skills and knowledge to succeed in your undergraduate studies with our Foundation Studies Certificate.
- 2 x 13-week semesters
- Starts in February and June
- NZQF level 4 qualification
- Successful completion leads into the 1st year of a Bachelor's degree
All students take courses in Academic English, then you'll choose a main area of study.
There are 4 options to choose from:
- Arts/Humanities
- Sciences
- Health Sciences
- Business/Commerce
Prepare for the Foundation Studies Certificate with our Bridging Programme
If you need to build your skills before you study a Foundation Studies Certificate or Diploma, our Bridging Programme is for you.
- 6 -week course
- Starts 3 times a year
- Equivalent to GPA 6.5 or level C in Academic English
- Successful completion required for entry to the Foundation Studies Certificate
This is helpful if you:
- are studying a new subject
- have been away from study for over a year
- need to improve your level of English.
Boost your English language skills
Whatever your level of English or future study plans, we have a programme to suit you at our English Language Centre.
All programmes require 23 hours a week commitment.
Programme | Level | Length | Description |

General English classes | Elementary to advanced | 3 start dates a year, continuous assessment | Prepare for the Foundation Studies Certificate and boost your confidence, on campus or online. |
English for Otago | Upper intermediate to advanced | 12 weeks | For students with conditional offers, this programme will get your English ready for university-level study. |
English for Academic Purposes | Upper intermediate to advanced | 4 week minimum | Focus on academic skills like essay writing, referencing and giving presentations. |
Interested in studying Social Work, Law, Teaching or postgraduate Dentistry?
These programmes have higher English language requirements so if English isn't your first language, you may need to study English for Academic Purposes first.
