Overview
Success in your chosen programme of study is the primary goal of tertiary education. The goals you have set for yourself, and the commitment you have made to your tertiary study, indicate you wish to succeed in your first year. At Caroline Freeman College, we will support you as you work to achieve your goals and realise your academic potential.
Students who are new to tertiary study are often surprised by the jump in level of teaching and learning. There are a wide range of services available to help residents at Caroline Freeman College to help you to adjust to this level of study.
Tutorials
At the start of the year the College runs a series of tutorial sessions on general topics such as time management, goal setting, assignments, etc. These are all part of “Academic Achievement Week” at Caroline Freeman College.
Subject-specific tutorials are organised where there are sufficient numbers of residents enrolled in the same paper. These tutorials are taken by senior and post-graduate students who are experienced in the subject matter and are skilled at assisting first-year students with their academic studies. We also share tutorials with other colleges in smaller subjects. Additional tutorials are often offered in the run-up to tests or exams.
In a typical year we are likely to offer tutorial support in all of the Heath Science First Year courses as well as psychology, law, commerce and others.
Advice and guidance
Every resident at CFC has an assigned academic mentor, one of the three senior staff. Your mentor will meet with you one-on-one at regular intervals during the year to discuss your progress and provide support with matters such as time management, goal setting and general advice and guidance about life at Otago.
Each member of the sub-warden team has an assigned “stairwell” of residents. The individual sub-warden has primary responsibility for providing support and assistance to those in the stairwell. However, all residents are free to speak to any member of the sub-warden team about any matter related to college or Otago life. Our sub-warden team members are selected for their diversity and wealth of experience about study and Dunedin life. They are here to help everyone.
College Library and study spaces
CFC has a fantastic library, well-stocked with both fiction and non-fiction resource books. We add to our extensive collection on an annual basis. We also maintain a selection of textbooks relevant to first-year courses. As well as books we have magazines and other resources available in the library. The CFC Library is a popular space for individual and group study as well as just relaxing with a good book on the comfy sofas and chairs.
In addition to the Library we have two dedicated tutorial / study rooms at CFC West which are available for small group or individual study. CFC East has extensive study areas located in Rātā Block. Both the CFC East and CFC West Dining Rooms are open 24/7 for study purposes and are popular study spots in the evenings.
Internet connectivity
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the College in bedrooms, apartment lounges and central common spaces. This is supplied by the University of Otago. The University maintains a high level of service, however occasional disruptions may occur.
