Overview
The aim of a Bachelor degree with Honours is to help students become highly skilled, versatile, independent thinkers with the research experience, information literacy, communication and interpersonal skills necessary for an advanced professional career or further academic study at the Master's or PhD level.
Eligibility to the Honours/Postgraduate Diploma degrees
To be eligible for the Bachelor with Honours or Postgraduate Diploma majoring in Geography or Environmental Management you must have:
- A degree majoring in Geography or Environmental Management or related degree
- An overall grade average of at least B
- At least a B+ average over the 300-level papers required for the degree
- A supervisor for your dissertation / research project
Choosing a potential supervisor
Productive postgraduate research depends on developing a successful collaboration between student and supervisor. The supervisor, or the principal supervisor in the case of co-supervision, should be an academic staff member in the School of Geography
Finding a supervisor for your research is a critical task, and before making a commitment to a particular project, students should find out as much as they can. Browse through staff research interests to find out who is most appropriate for your area of interest. It is often best to contact the academic staff member(s) by email asking the supervisor's expectations of students are, and the supervisor's availability over the course of the research.
It is important at the outset to establish that financial or laboratory (if applicable) resources are available to complete the planned research. Generally, the greater the shared interest in the topic of the research, the more likely it is that both the student and the supervisor will be stimulated to work together productively.
Our postgraduate students profiles are also a good place to look for information on the kinds of projects they are currently working on.
Be sure to check the School of Geography research framework for ideas on the kind of work staff are currently undertaking.
