Geology Theses and Dissertations

Even though the university has moved to digital archiving of thesis work, the Department of Geology continues to maintains a hardcopy library of all thesis and dissertations undertaken in our department. These can be referenced and used within the department (no external loans are possible) and are particularly useful due to the supplementary material (maps, imagery) often included with geology theses.

Format

All theses should be formatted for printing double sided with 30mm inside margins and 20mm margins on top, bottom, outside. There are no other strict formatting rules. This guide below has some recommendations about how you can format your thesis.

GEOL 302/304 report printing

Students are required to submit their GEOL 302/304 report in both digital (PDF) and printed form. The printed report should be soft bound and include a map pocket. Report printing and binding are to be done and paid for by each student. The large map sheet or equivalent (approx. A1 size) will be printed for you by the Geology Department prior to the end-of-paper mini-conference. After the mini-conference carefully fold the large sheet to fit into the map pocket of your report.

MSc and PhD submissions

The university has established procedures for submitting MSc and PhD theses for examination (see elsewhere on the university website for more information) – and consult with your supervisor or department administrator for more information. In all cases, theses are submitted as digital files (usually PDF).

MSc theses are submitted through the department administrator. Email geology@otago.ac.nz
PhD thesis are submitted through the Graduate Research School. Email phd@otago.ac.nz

Final hard-bound printing for MSc and PhD

The Department of Geology will cover the cost of printing and hard-binding up to three copies of your thesis (plus maps). You or your supervisor will need to pay for any additional copies. All students should follow the steps below and supply all files electronically to the Geology administrator.

Follow these steps:

  1. Fill out and sign the Author declaration form (PDF)
  2. Fill out the bindery order form
  3. Forward to Uniprint – Electronic version of thesis, digital declaration form, one bindery order form, and printing order form.
