The Franz Josef Glacier extends down the steep western front of the Alps to within a few hundred metres of sea-level. Rainfall on the mountain slopes exceeds 10m/yr (see 'Golden Rivers' feature). The arcuate forested ridge in the foreground is a terminal moraine recently correlated with the Younger Dryas glacial advance at around 11,000 yr BP. (DOC photo)
