Project Description
The Otago Schist is well known as an important host for gold mineralisation since gold was first discovered along its southern margins near Gabriels Gully over 150 years ago. Most more modern exploration for hard rock gold deposits since then, however has concentrated on the better known historic workings of central and east Otago, especially around the currently active Macraes Mine on the NE margin of the schist belt. Much less is known about the historic workings in the southwest margin of the schist belt, in particular the gold deposits at Waipori and in the areas surrounding Lake Mahinerangi.
This thesis aims to map and study these historic deposits in order to characterise their structural setting, mineral association and alteration footprints. These details will be used to establish a structural framework for the deposits in this area and compare and contrast them with the better known deposits of east Otago like Macraes, Barewood and Nenthorn.
