The Borland field school is one of two compulsory field trips for the paper GEOL252: Field Studies and NZ Geology
Important details for the Borland field school
(Semester 1)
Dates for this field school are shown on the field trips page.
This is during term time so that you will miss the four teaching days before the Easter break.
There will be no 200-Level Geology classes held during that period. Other departments have been informed that Geology students will be away. We will provide a letter for you if required, requesting that other departments make notes etc. available to you for that week.
Food and accommodation
- Staying at Borland Lodge, near Lake Monowai; RD Otautau, Southland
- Cabin accommodation
- Except for lunch on the first and last day, food will be provided communally; the cost is indicated on the field schools page
- Cooks will be appointed to supervise the kitchen, plan the menu, and prepare the meals. Students will be rostered for washing-up, etc. If you have special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian, allergies, etc) which you have not already told us about, please email the Geology Administrator as soon as possible at geology@otago.ac.nz
- Borland Lodge is administered by the Southland Youth Adventure Trust and has a resident warden. A rule of the Trust is: no alcohol allowed in the camp. As we value our good relations with the Trust, this rule will be adhered to!
What you'll need
High-vis vest, sleeping bag; pillow; warm clothes and waterproofs; boots; map-case or similar; hand-lens; hammer; note-book and pencils; coloured pencils; ruler and protractor; calculator; lunch on Saturday; thermos flask (if desired, for hot drinks); chocolate, snacks, etc. which are not provided as part of the meals.
