The Graduate Research School administers funds to complement existing funding available to assist Māori and indigenous Pacific graduate research candidates to attend, or to attend and present papers, at a local, national or international conference.

To assist as many candidates as possible each year, and because funding is limited, grants will be limited to a maximum of $1000 per applicant. Expenses that may be covered by the conference grant include travel, accommodation, and conference registration fees. Meal expenses will not be covered.

  • Only thesis Master’s or Doctoral candidates of Māori or indigenous Pacific origin are eligible to apply for a grant
    Ancestry verification information
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a research thesis (i.e. not a dissertation or project report). Candidates may be under-examination at the time of their conference, but the conference dates must not fall after the degree has been awarded at the completion of the examination process
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who are applying to attend their first conference and to those who are giving a presentation at their conference or meeting
  • Applicants should, where possible, submit their application and supporting documentation at least 6 weeks before intended travel
  • Applicants must use one of the University approved travel agencies (helloworld Travel or Orbit World Travel) to obtain flight quotes.  This will ensure the best possible price, with University of Otago travellers being eligible for special fares, and excellent back up if travel disruptions should occur

  • Doctoral applicants are encouraged to also apply for their Divisional Conference Funding at the time of applying to the Graduate Research School
