What, why and how?
Offered four times a year on the campus of the University of Otago, Christchurch, the IPE discharge planning simulation activity brings together advanced-level students and new graduates from up to seven health and social professional groups in each session.
The explicit aim of the activity is the development of a collaborative-ready workforce for the future, with a focus on such competencies as teamwork, interprofessional coordination and shared decision-making.
Working together in small interprofessional groups, students prepare a simulated patient for discharge from a stroke unit, planning and coordinating follow-up care of the patient who lives in a rural community.
Each simulation activity runs for 3.5 hours, including an introductory session, an interprofessional group meeting, a question and answer session with a member of the simulated patient's whānau, completion of an online discharge summary, and an all-groups discussion and learning reflection.
